Dulce et Decorum Est and Disabled Essay Example For Students

Dulce et Decorum Est and Disabled Essay Both Dulce et Decorum Est and Disabled are poems seemingly intended to allow the reader to perceive the harsh realities of war without themselves becoming corrupted by the evils of warfare. Neither poem attempts to glorify the event of war in the twentieth century, yet both provide such disturbing insights into war that certain comments made in the poems seem to detract from the horrific nature of death and destruction, merely for something each opposing nation believes in. Dulce et Decorum Est is considerably shorter than Disabled, and so I feel that it endeavours to provide the reader with a wealth of vivid images intended to shock. Although not exactly action-packed, due to its length, more must happen in order to drive the message home- the message being that it is not right and proper to die for your country. Disabled, however, is longer, and can therefore rely on not having to include the shock tactics employed in Dulce et Decorum Est. This poem builds up the subtle differences between the soldiers life before and after the war. It uses its extra length to slowly build up pity for the disabled soldier-there is a direct contrast and similarity here between the two poems. Both predominant subject matters fall foul of the rigours of war, yet in Dulce et Decorum Est the subject dies, whilst in Disabled the focus is placed on the effect that the soldiers disability has had on his life, both psychologically as well as physically. Disabled seems to draw out each expression in order to achieve maximum possible sympathy for the victim: He sat in a wheeled chair, waiting for dark, This simple lengthening of words suffices to lengthen the period of time for which the reader feels sympathetic towards the crippled soldier. One interesting way in which both the poems are written is the reaction of both soldiers involved in the case of Dulce et Decorum Est the reaction of both the gassed and protected soldier. In Disabled the soldier offers almost a lackadaisical reasoning towards the loss of his legs, as if he expected it at some point during his time at the front line: In the old times, before he threw away his knees The soldier in question adopts an extremely reflective stance on his disability, as if speaking from the voice of experience. The soldier in Dulce et Decorum Est offers no clue as to length of time he has been fighting in the front line, but appears to be shocked and panicky towards the death of a comrade: In all my dreams before my helpless sight He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning The soldier here provides an insight into what his life was like in the trenches- he could close his eyes to avoid sickening visions, yet they return to haunt him in his sleep, when he cannot help but relive his nightmares-hence the reference to helpless sight-he cannot simply close  his eyes in a dream. Yet even if no reference is made to the period of time spent at the front, it is obvious that both poems use the uniqueness of experience to dissuade the reader from joining the war. Dulce et Decorum Est uses imagery to suggest that the soldiers have experienced great atrocities: Till on the haunting flares we turn our backs This suggests that during the period of time they have spent at the front, even a innocuous sending off of a flare haunts their every move. The very word haunts suggests something of dead spirits present on the battlefield. .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 , .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .postImageUrl , .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 , .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:hover , .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:visited , .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:active { border:0!important; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:active , .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700 .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9f7c1d8c3bd90b5ffaff72891a939700:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Poetic Facts Of Life EssayDisabled gives the impression of experience through the line: Esprit de corps; and hints for young recruits Both poems then use this experience to reveal the horror to which they have been subjected, but in different ways. Dulce et Decorum Est is set on the battlefield, and seeks to place you at the scene of the choking man in order for you to comprehend what this man was forced to experience for his country, whilst Disabled contemplates on his life after his horrific injuries sustained whilst fighting for his country. Yet that particular quotation also lends one to notice another point which both poems acknowledge- the incredibly young age at which young people voluntarily subscribed to the army. Indeed, both poems offer something of a hypothesis as to why these young men are signing up. Dulce et Decorum Est was first used by Horace- the full line Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori, roughly translating as how sweet and fitting it is to die for ones country is followed by a line also roughly translated as death pursues the man who runs away. In essence, it is offering each young man the more valiant death by dying for ones own country rather than by any other way. Owen believes that many soldiers are only subscribed for want of desperate glory. In Disabled the maimed recruit subscribed only to please the giddy jilts- this is hardly a reason worthy of the horrific injuries which have scarred the rest of his existence. Both reasons cited by the soldiers are egotistical- personal glory and Owen use s the attempt by the hierarchy of persuading boys of tender age to war by turning the title phrase around in the final stanza of Dulce et Decorum Est: The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. The inclusion of the word old implies in my opinion that it is the age-old lies of the war Generals that Owen feels is corrupting tomorrows youth. He attempts to drag the aspects of war so seemingly appealing to the mass of Britains youth through the mud of the battlefield where so many of his comrades have already lost their lives. This derogatory vision of warfare is illustrated in both poems- one could say that both soldiers have been dehumanised as a result of  their experiences upon the battlefield: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ before he threw away his knees This unperturbed approach to the horror of warfare is intended to shock the reader-how can anyone talk in such languid tones about such a disabling event? Owen conveys dangerous messages, in order to show exactly what has become of the men whose boyish appeal for joining the army turned against them. Dulce implies sweet, yet by the end of the poem the reader can see that warfare is anything but sweet. Irony is also used in Disabled- he who has joined up to impress the girls with his masculine kilted legs no longer possesses any legs, and because he joined whilst intoxicated, the control he didnt not possess then over his limbs is permanent, rather than the temporary Both poems employ similar and different techniques, yet in my opinion it is the differences that struck me the most. Both poems dissuaded me from the warfare, but by vastly different methods. The short, stark images presented to me in Dulce et Decorum Est really puts the reader in the middle of the action, building up each vision with alarming clarity, until the final realisation of the true meaning of the title of the poem is revealed. Disableds reflective rhyming verse seemed to reveal more about the personal and mental torture the average soldier was subjected to during his time at the front.

Julius Essays - McCarthyism, Manhattan Project,

Julius Robert Oppenheimer Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an American physicist and government adviser, who directed the development of the first atomic bombs. To scientists, he was not only the builder of the atomic bomb and a pioneer in atomic energy, but a master of many languages, a good conversationalist and a brilliant mathematician. He was also a writer, and an expert in both the history of architecture and the religions of the world. Oppenheimer, who was born in New York City on April 22, 1904, and educated at Harvard University and the Universities of Cambridge and Gottingen, grew up in a middle class neighborhood. He was raised by his mother, who was an artist who provided a nice apartment with a subdued, tasteful atmosphere. His grandfather came from Germany where he was a peasant farmer and grain merchant. The Oppenheimer's family business was importing fabric for the clothing industry. As a child in grade school, Oppenheimer excelled in all subjects. This continued straight through all of his schooling. During his years at Harvard University, Oppenheimer excelled in Latin, Greek, physics and chemistry. He also published poetry and studied Oriental philosophy. After graduating in 1925, he sailed to England to do research in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University , which, under the leadership of Lord Rutherford, had an international reputation for its pioneering studies on atomic structure. Oppenheimer was fortunate to enter physics in 1925 because that is when modern quantum mechanics came into being. He was one of the first scientists to use quantum mechanics for the exploration of problems which had been insoluble with the old quantum theory. While at Cambridge, Oppenheimer had the opportunity to work with the British scientific community in its efforts to advance the cause of atomic research. Shortly thereafter, Max Born invited him to Gottingen University, where he met other prominent physicists, such as Niels Bohr and Paul Dirac, and where, in 1927, he received his doctorate. He then returned to the United States. After serving with the International Education Board from 1928 to 1929, Oppenheimer became a professor of physics at the University of California at Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology where he worked from1929 to 1947. There he built up large schools of theoretical physics. He was noted for his contributions relating to the quantum theory, the theory of relativity, cosmic rays, positrons, and neutron stars. He was also able to show that a baffling movement of a deuteron (heavy hydrogen nucleus), being loosely bound, surrenders its neutron on entering the field of a heavy nucleus. The effect was that the heavy nucleus captures the stripped neutron, becomes unstable and then radioactive. This discovery helped to later develop the hydrogen bomb, which is thousands of times more powerful than the atomic bomb. In his early years of teaching, Oppenheimer had little success and many students complained to the head of the physics department about how quiet he was and how he overestimated his audience. The department head, Raymond T. Birge, knew that Oppenheimer already knew that he was not getting through to the students and therefore did not need to be told. Soon enough he began to interact with his audience by dropping his pace of delivery and going to great lengths to make connections between ideas clearer. By doing this he attracted a small group of some of the brightest students. These students thought of him as a brilliant lecturer and some remarked that he was one of their most inspiring professors. In 1940 Oppenheimer married a woman named Katherine Harrison. They had one son whom they named Peter and a daughter whom they named Katherine. They lived in a beautiful house on Eagle Hill in the San Francisco Bay area. During a leave of absence that lasted from 1943 until 1945, Oppenheimer served as director of the atomic bomb project at Los Alamos, New Mexico. After warnings from Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard, both respected scientists, that the world would be in grave danger if the Nazis were the first to create an atomic bomb, Oppenheimer began to seek a process for the separation of uranium-235 from natural uranium. He also strove to discover a way to determine the critical mass of uranium required to make such a bomb. On July 16, 1945, the joint effort of outstanding scientists at Los Alamos created the first nuclear explosion. This took place at Alamogordo, New Mexico. That October, Oppenheimer resigned from the project. His leadership and organizational skills during the project earned him the Presidential Medal of Merit in 1946. In

The eNotes Blog The World According to IsaacAsimov

The World According to IsaacAsimov If youre anything like the average employee at headquarters, youre probably still drooling over the forthcoming generation of Apple iPhones. So allow me to ease you out of your reverie with a fun retrospect of how our bright future was predicted near perfectly almost 50 years ago. Image via Cinema Blend Back in 1964, the Jetsons were on television, the lava lamp had just been invented, and the Moon was as yet uncharted territory. Isaac Asimov was also a popular science fiction writer of the time, though it was still six years before he would write his most famous short story I, Robot. Instead, he wrote an essay for the New York Times in which he imagined a trip to the Worlds Fair of 2014, five decades into the future. On the brink of that very event and in the middle of a whirlwind of technological advancement, lets take a look at five of the astounding predictions Asimov made for the 21st century: Image via CUInsight Lighting   Our new world would apparently be designed without windows in mind. One thought that occurs to me is that men will continue to withdraw from nature in order to create an environment that will suit them better. By 2014, electroluminescent panels will be in common use. Ceilings and walls will glow softly, and in a variety of colors that will change at the touch of a push button. Windows need be no more than an archaic touch, and even when present will be polarized to block out the harsh sunlight. The degree of opacity of the glass may even be made to alter automatically in accordance with the intensity of the light falling upon it. Sorry Asimov, but for the most part we still look to good old window dressings to block out the sunlight. We do, however, have polarized transition lenses in our eyewear. Though I believe science is still trying to work out a way that wont leave one with permanently halfway-tinted glasses in your averagely lit room There is an underground house at the fair which is a sign of the future. if its windows are not polarized, they can nevertheless alter the scenery by changes in lighting. Suburban houses underground, with easily controlled temperature, free from the vicissitudes of weather, with air cleaned and light controlled, should be fairly common. Once again weve wasted one of Asimovs completely practical ideas by employing it for needlessly decadent purposes, like having a casino in Vegas thats lit to make you feel like youre walking the streets of Paris but hey, its something. Image via Trend Hunter Food Preparation Gadgetry will continue to relieve mankind of tedious jobs. Kitchen units will be devised that will prepare automeals, heating water and converting it to coffee; toasting bread; frying, poaching or scrambling eggs, grilling bacon, and so on. Breakfasts will be ordered the night before to be ready by a specified hour the next morning. Complete lunches and dinners, with the food semiprepared, will be stored in the freezer until ready for processing. Viva the frozen dinner! Its like he had a crystal ball that stared directly into my life! I suspect, though, that even in 2014 it will still be advisable to have a small corner in the kitchen unit where the more individual meals can be prepared by hand, especially when company is coming. Hmph. Image via Scientell Robots Robots will neither be common nor very good in 2014, but they will be in existence. The I.B.M. exhibit at the present fair has no robots but it is dedicated to computers, which are shown in all their amazing complexity, notably in the task of translating Russian into English. If machines are that smart today, what may not be in the works 50 years hence? It will be such computers, much miniaturized, that will serve as the brains of robots. In fact, the I.B.M. building at the 2014 Worlds Fair may have, as one of its prime exhibits, a robot housemaid *large, clumsy, slow- moving but capable of general picking-up, arranging, cleaning and manipulation of various appliances. It will undoubtedly amuse the fairgoers to scatter debris over the floor in order to see the robot lumberingly remove it and classify it into throw away and set aside. (Robots for gardening work will also have made their appearance.) Actually Isaac, no need for a ticket to the World Fair to see the latest housecleaning robot; your local Bed, Bath, and Beyond will let you play with a Roomba for free. As a side note, I was pleasantly surprised that the author strayed from the cliche expectations that the world would be run by robots by this time. In fact, it actually seems like weve ever so slightly surpassed his visions for technology in this area, for I I have practically all the makings of a robot in a device that fits in the palm of my hand. Although, Im pretty sure were all still using it to translate Russian into English. Image via Techyuga 3D Movies General Electric at the 2014 Worlds Fair will be showing 3-D movies of its Robot of the Future, neat and streamlined, its cleaning appliances built in and performing all tasks briskly. (There will be a three-hour wait in line to see the film, for some things never change.)   As for television, wall screens will have replaced the ordinary set; but transparent cubes will be making their appearance in which three-dimensional viewing will be possible. In fact, one popular exhibit at the 2014 Worlds Fair will be such a 3-D TV, built life-size, in which ballet performances will be seen. The first point may as well be true. As Asimov correctly predicted, both the movie and TV viewers of the early 21st century are bored of 2 meager dimensions, though I still hold out hope that 3D TVs never catch on. Image via Youtube GPS and the Google Car Much effort will be put into the designing of vehicles with Robot-brains*vehicles that can be set for particular destinations and that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflexes of a human driver. I suspect one of the major attractions of the 2014 fair will be rides on small roboticized cars which will maneuver in crowds at the two-foot level, neatly and automatically avoiding each other. These days, most of us cant walk, ride, or drive anywhere without turning to GPS. I myself am lost without my smart phone and Google maps. Literally. On top of that, the Google driveless car is almost a reality. If you live in Nevada, Florida, or California, you may just see these autonomous cars out and about on public roads. But then Asimov took it a little far thinking wed all be commuting on hovercrafts by now. Jets of compressed air will also lift land vehicles off the highways, which, among other things, will minimize paving problems. Smooth earth or level lawns will do as well as pavements. Bridges will also be of less importance, since cars will be capable of crossing water on their jets, though local ordinances will discourage the practice. Alas, were still made to suffer the pitfalls and potholes of state roads. I couldnt even touch on his ideas for video phone calls, tofurkey, or moon colonies, or indeed his terrifying idea of a vastly over-populated World-Manhattan. Even with what was at most a speculation of life five decades into the future, the writer really pegged us surprisingly well. For while his dark vision of an over-populated society has not come to pass, his closing lines show a somber knowledge of exactly where were headed: Mankind will suffer badly from the disease of boredom, a disease spreading more widely each year and growing in intensity. This will have serious mental, emotional and sociological consequences, and I dare say that psychiatry will be far and away the most important medical specialty in 2014. The lucky few who can be involved in creative work of any sort will be the true elite of mankind, for they alone will do more than serve a machine. Hope you enjoyed this look back as much as I did. Cheers to the new world!

Let's Be Lefties for a Day Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Let's Be Lefties for a Day - Essay Example What is it like to be a left-hander in a world of right-handers? (I am a right-hander). To explore this, I woke up one morning and posed a restriction on my right hand by enclosing a ping-pong ball in my right hand and tying it up tightly with a sock. I began brushing my teeth. Noticing that the angles of brushing were going awry, my right hand subconsciously tried to assist. No, I told myself and desisted. (After a couple of hours, I could still detect a faint trace of bad odour). Then, bathing was an absolute horror. My sock got wet in a matter of seconds. I had to sign some cheques and write a letter before leaving for office. The result, on paper looked like a child’s scrawl. My daughter tossed me a ball and I ended up overbalancing and falling on the floor, not to mention missing it completely. We also observe people who do not elicit the same treatment meted out to us. For instance, I remember my college days when we had a guy who was good at studies. He would lock himse lf up and stick to academics. He would not join us in sports, dating or drinking. We used to snigger behind his back. He was considered ‘abnormal’. Was it right on our part to label him thus? All of us know the answer. People who do not conform to their peer-set’s so-called norms and practices are often scorned. But the attitude is not right. One cannot expect everyone to fall into the majority.

Organizational structure Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Organizational structure - Essay Example The present optimal organizational structure of the MH Company is not designed to complement the company’s plans for expanding their business internationally. With the present organizational structure, the Vice President of International Sales is ill equipped to meet the challenges of the global business environment primarily because macro environment elements significantly influence the market strategy for global business entities. Marketing comprises micro and macro economic factors. The micro economic factors like price, products etc. are directly under the control of the organizations and can be manipulated to suit the market conditions. The macro environment factors, on the other hand are elements that are external but have major impact on the industry performance: economic; demographic trend; changing socio-cultural paradigm; developing new environmental compulsions; advancing technology; and political environment of the region (Kotler et al, 2007). Sjostrand and Tyrstrup, in one of their article, have argued that managerial leadership needs to be approached as a relational, ongoing social construction process rather than as a single clear cut phenomenon (2001). Indeed, for any organization to expand and succeed, it is crucial that its people are recognized as vital part of its strategy and organizational goals and objectives be interpreted in the context of the changing paradigms of the times. Beardwell and Claydon have also asserted that the theoretical concept of human resource management needs to be looked from a wider perspective of providing the invaluable human capital that can meet the challenges of the rapid globalization and advancing technology. (Beardwell, Claydon, 2007). With the global competition becoming increasingly stiff, the jobs specifications are becoming less rigid and changing the overall perspective of job criteria and employment. The HR strategy needs to develop its unique organizational culture with well defined vision

Administering Windows Essay Example for Free

Administering Windows Essay Why doesn’t the system drive (C:) appear on the Select where you want to save your backup page? You cannot backup on the same partition where the system is, Windows backup tool does not allow this. If a virus infection or software failure occurs you would have to reformat your drive, it would be illogical for this tool to allow you to back up on the system partition. As we already know partitions are separate drives you cannot back up on the same drive it defeats the purpose of backing up. If that drive is erased so is the back up. Why does a warning appear when you select the System Backup (K:) drive, informing you that the K: drive is on the same physical disk as your system drive? The K: Drive is on the same internal harddisk if the Harddisk fails the backup is lost also. That is why it is important that OM image is backed up externally in case of hard disk failure. If windows becomes corrupt on the system partition you can use the OM image that was partitioned to recover it. That is the one instance that image is viable. Question Why doesn’t the Windows folder appear under the Local Disk (C:) drive? Simply because the file and folder backup capability in the Windows backup cannot back up system and application files. To protect the entire system drive, you must perform a system image backup What is the size of the backup, as indicated on the Backup and Restore control panel?309.22 MB Question How does the time required for this backup compare with that for the same job the first time you ran it? I believe it was slightly faster however I was reading during the time of the first backup. Question How many Backup Files folders are there beneath the Backup Set folder? 3 backup files folder and 1 Catalogs folder What is the size of the folder?308MB size on disk 308BM Why is the second Backup Files folder so much smaller than  the first one? Because it only backed up the changes I made since the last backup. Incremental backups is a type of job that only backs up the files that have changed since the last backup was performed. Question How many options are there to choose from in the Restore Files dialog box? 3 Question How many results appear in the Search for files to restore dialog box and from which backup jobs are they? 1 Question From which of the three backups you performed is the Newfile.txt file going to be restored? The most recent Performing a single backup job provides only limited protection against hardware failure. To fully protect your data, you must back up regularly, and Windows 7 enables you to schedule backup jobs to run at specified intervals. To complete this challenge, you must create a job that backs up your workstation’s entire system (C:) drive to the X: drive every Friday at 11:00 PM. Write out the procedure for creating the job and take a screen shot of the Review your backup settings page by pressing Alt+Prt Scr, and then paste the resulting image into the Lab15_worksheet file in the page provided by pressing Ctrl+V. Using Disk management I used the unallocated space to create a 4th logical partition. In back up and restore window I changed the settings where I wanted to backup to the newly created X: partition. Then I clicked change schedule and changed the settings. To use BranchCache, you must configure the appropriate Group Policy settings  on both the host servers and the branch office computers. To complete this challenge, you must create three Group Policy objects called BranchCache Content Servers, BranchCache Hosted Cache Servers, and BranchCache Clients, and configure each GPO with the settings needed to create a BranchCache implementation that uses your classroom server (RWDC01) as a hosted cache server. Write out the procedure for creating the GPOs and take screen shots of the three GPOs in the Group Policy Management Editor console by pressing Alt+Prt Scr, and then paste the resulting image into the Lab15_worksheet file in the page provided by pressing Ctrl+V. Under Group Policy Management I opened domains contoso and expanded Group Policy Object then created the 3 Policies by right clicking and clicking NEW. I then Right clicked the new Policies and went in Computer configuration/policies/Admin Templates/Network. For the Content Server Policies I when in LANMAN SERVER and enabled the HASH policy. For the other two I went to BranchCache and enabled Hosted BranchCache and BranchCache mode and set the server location at \\RWDC01

Hybridity and National Identity in Postcolonial Literature Essay

Hybridity and National Identity in Postcolonial Literature  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚     Every human being, in addition to having their own personal identity, has a sense of who they are in relation to the larger community--the nation. Postcolonial studies is the attempt to strip away conventional perspective and examine what that national identity might be for a postcolonial subject. To read literature from the perspective of postcolonial studies is to seek out--to listen for, that indigenous, representative voice which can inform the world of the essence of existence as a colonial subject, or as a postcolonial citizen. Postcolonial authors use their literature and poetry to solidify, through criticism and celebration, an emerging national identity, which they have taken on the responsibility of representing. Surely, the reevaluation of national identity is an eventual and essential result of a country gaining independence from a colonial power, or a country emerging from a fledgling settler colony. However, to claim to be representative of that entire identity is a huge undertaking for an author trying to convey a postcolonial message. Each nation, province, island, state, neighborhood and individual is its own unique amalgamation of history, culture, language and tradition. Only by understanding and embracing the idea of cultural hybridity when attempting to explore the concept of national identity can any one individual, or nation, truly hope to understand or communicate the lasting effects of the colonial process. Postcolonialism is the continual shedding of the old skin of Western thought and discourse and the emergence of new self-awareness, critique, and celebration. With this self-awareness comes self-expression. But how should the i... ...nial institution--one voice which would articulate their own sense of national identity. But exploration of these societies, and the literature produced by postcolonial authors and poets illustrates that there is a veritable infinite number of differing circumstances inherent in each postcolonial society, and, consequently, in each piece of literature produced by postcolonial writers. If one is to read this literature in a way which will shed some light on the postcolonial condition, one must understand and adopt the theory that we are all walking amalgamations of our own unique cultures and traditions. We are all always struggling with our own identities, personal and national. We must understand that there is no "one true voice" representing an easily identifiable postcolonial condition, but, instead, each author is his or her own voice and must be read as such.

Expenditures and Revenues Summary: Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Essay

The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, a statutory government agency, is responsible for providing services to three mandated programs in Palm Beach County, Florida (PBSO.org, 2013). Those programs are Law Enforcement, Corrections Services throughout Palm Beach County’s jails, and finally Bailiff and Court staff. Palm Beach Sheriff’s office is required to respond to law enforcement calls throughout the county and all unincorporated areas of Palm Beach County. Palm Beach Sheriff’s office is also responsible for providing services to certain municipalities throughout Palm Beach County, if a contract exists between the municipality and the Sheriff’s office. The municipality must come to a fee agreement with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s office before a contract is established. The following will elaborate on the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office revenue and expenditures and the impact of the expenditures on the revenue source. The following will also elaborate on who the key players are in terms of making budget decisions and whether or not there is any influence of political and public policies on the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. Finally, recommended organizational financial analysis alternatives for the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office will be researched. The Impact of the Expenditures on the Revenue Source Palm Beach County is located in South Florida and is the largest county in square mileage in Florida at 2,268 square miles. Palm Beach County is Florida’s third largest populated county with just under 1.4 million residents (PBSO.org, 2014).The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office maintains 3,949 allocations throughout Palm Beach County and boasts 1,333 sworn law enforcement officers, 7,757 civilian support staff, 689 sworn Corrections officers and 170 sworn Court services and Bailiff; therefore a large portion of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office budget is allocated to programs. Personal services, according to the Sheriff’s Office (2014) means this part of the budget is considered to pay employee wages and benefits. This program is divided in to thee parts, Law Enforcement, Corrections and Court Services  and Bailiff, which in turns means three different expenditures. A total of $510,102,878.00 for the Sheriff’s was requested for the 2014 fiscal year in order to support the three programs. This amount is an increase of about 5.8% from the 2013 fiscal year (PBSO.org, 2014). The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office is funded through various revenues generated from Law Enforcement services, ad-valorem taxes and utility taxes. The Sheriff’s Office collects 15% of all revenues collected through adult entertainment and revenue is also received by the State of Florida for Crime Laboratory Operations. Funds are established by the Florida Crime Laboratory Council. Safety services also generate revenue for the Sheriff’s Office. The charges and fees are ultimately determined by the Statute and fee schedule approved by the Sheriff. These contracts include airport security, Private and Governmental Off-Duty permits and other law enforcement contract. The Safety Service fees make up a large portion of the Sheriff’s revenues (PBSO. org, 2014). Other revenues include fines and forfeitures, commission on coin telephones used by the county’s inmates, taxes levied on assessed properties in Palm Beach County and utility tax. According to Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (2014), each program is divided in to three expenditures. Those expenditures are Law Enforcement, Corrections and Court Services and Bailiff. Each of the three program categories is broken down even further. Those parts are listed as Personal Services, Operating and Capital Outlay. Each variable requires funds in order to operate; for example, the Law Enforcement Program was budgeted for a total budget of $347,035,274.00 out of the $510,102,878.00. As stated this program is further broken down in to three variables, Personal Services, Operating and Capital Outlay. A total of $276,397,453.00 is budgeted for personal services. $60,185,099 is budgeted for Operating and $10,452,722.00 is budgeted for Capital Outlay. This brings the total to $347,035,274.00 dollars budgeted for the Law Enforcement Program. This total is about 60% of the total budget for 2014. It is important to understand that 81% of the operating budget consists of wages, overtime and employee benefits. These are items which are set through collective bargaining, policy, contracts and also receive protection under to Career Service Bill (PBSO.org, 2014). Key  Players Involved in Deciding on a Budget Because the Sheriff’s Office is large and requires time to create a reasonable budget, the budgeting process begins in December of the preceding year (PBSO.org, 2014). In January, the Palm Beach Sheriff discusses the philosophy for the approaching fiscal year. The Sheriff’s Office had an established budget staff which provides an overview of the budget process and provides details regarding the upcoming budget preparation and procedures. Executives and Senior Staff conduct a series of internal reviews before the proposed budget is presented the Sheriff. The Sheriff then reviews the proposed budget and either accepts or denies the budget. Once the Sheriff approves the budget a signed copy is sent to the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioner by May 1. The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners Office of Finance Management and Budget would then schedule a number of workshops for the County’s proposed budget. It is during these workshops that modifications to the Sheriff’s budget can be presented. Budgets may be modified based on the receipt of grant funds, donations or other sources outside of the Sheriff’s adopted budget. In September, there are two public hearing scheduled during which the final budget is adopted. The budget must be adopted for October 1, the start of the new fiscal year. The Influence of Politics and Public Policies on the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners Office of Finance Management and Budget is a governmental organization which oversees the Sheriff’s proposed budget on a yearly basis. The Constitutional Officers who oversee the budget include Clerk and Comptroller Office, Tax Collector and Property Appraiser (Palm Beach County, 2014). All three entities are those of local government. These three organizations are responsible for reviewing not only the Sheriff’s budget, but all other budgets relating to cities in Palm Beach County who provide public assistance. Politics can play a huge role when considering a budget proposal. In this case, these three entities know what funding is available as they are responsible for collecting different revenues. If the money is not available to fund the entire budget request, then cuts will be made to the budget; furthermore, because budgets are able to be accessed by  the public, is important to ensure that all decisions regarding the budget are ethical decisions. Financial Analysis Alternatives In the event that there is a loss of revenue source, there are many other options the Sheriff’s Office can explore in order to obtain funding. The Sheriff’s Office, like any other police department, has many departments which are responsible for investigating certain crimes; for example, the Sheriff’s Office created a department specifically for tracking online sexual predators. The United States Department of Justice provides funding to the Sheriff’s Office for strategically targeting online predators. The Sheriff’s office would be able to continue funding this department and maintaining its multidisciplinary team to assist in the development and implementation of the strategy. The COPS hiring Program (CHP) is dedicated to enhancing community policing by addressing the needs of a state, local or tribal law enforcement agency. The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) provides funding so that law enforcement agencies are able to hire new or career law enforcement officers. Employing more officers would increase crime prevention efforts in a given district (U.S. Department of Justice, 2014). The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) will provide up to 75% of any approved entry-level salary and fringe benefits. The officers must be hired as full-time officers for the length of grant period, which is 36 months. A minimum of 25% of the officer’s salary must be matched by the hiring agency and a maximum federal share of $125,000 per officer. Under the COPS Hiring Program, the agency is only able to hire up to 5% of the agency’s sworn police officers (U.S Department of Justice, 2014). According to the Sheriff’s Office (2014), there are two other sources of alternative funding. Alternative funding can be obtained through forfeiture funds which are obtained from cases which assets and cash are seized and eventually released to the law enforcement agency. Forfeiture funds may come from state and federal governments and ought to be used to purchase equipment which was unable to be funded. Secondly, alternative funds may come from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office grant program. This program  generates millions of dollars annually. In the past, grant funding has enabled the Sheriff’s Office to purchase patrol boats; additionally, the grant funding, the Sheriff’s Office has also purchased 245 square miles of waterway in Palm Beach County and 45 miles of shoreline (PBSO.org, 2014). Conclusion In conclusion, The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office is large law enforcement agency within Palm Beach County which provides law enforcement, corrections and court services to Palm Beach County. The Sheriff’s office is also contracted by a number of cities within Palm Beach County to perform law enforcement duties within that area. Drafting a budget proposal can be challenging and difficult for such a large organization. Upon completing this research, one can easily see the much thought and preparation is needed to complete a budget which will allow the Sheriff’s Office to continuously provide services to those within the jurisdictions. The preceding elaborated on the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office revenue and expenditures and the impact of the expenditures on the revenue source. The preceding also elaborated on who the key players are in terms of making budget decisions and whether or not there is any influence of political and public policies on the Palm Beach Sh eriff’s Office. Finally, the organizational financial analysis alternatives for the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office were discussed. References Palm Beach County (2014). Preparing for Budgets. A Comparative Analysis of the Writings of Jack London and...

London and Crane: Death Many authors fixate on a theme through much of their writing. Of course, if one is at all prolific, they have to write based on more than one, but, often, it seems that writers have a particular bent that controls them. A good example is Edgar Allen Poe who was shaped by misery and self-loathing. His life reflected that as much as his writing, and he seemed to believe that it was his lot to find some unrighteous ending. Another writer who was consumed by a particular phantom was Jack London. Among the many writers who would eventually commit suicide, London always held death at bay just by the slimmest of margins. His stories seemed to be about adventure and winning the struggle against the wilderness, but in the background the reaper was always present. Stephen Crane was another that battled death in his writing because he seemed to want to know how he would handle it. This paper compares the writings of Jack London and Stephen Crane as they explore the subje ct of mortality. Short Biography It must first be noted that the two writers were very different, even though they wrote at about the same time. Crane was a journalist as well as a writer who was a war correspondent in several small conflicts around the turn of the century. He died very young (28) after being a prolific writer for a decade. It is amazing to think that someone who was so young could have written the deep and introspective The Red Badge of Courage.
